When you think of the biggest names in cooking, who is the first person to come to mind? If you’re thinking of Gordon Ramsey, that’s not surprising. Or perhaps Bobby Flay or even Martha Stewart, who are also well-known cooks. There are plenty of famous chefs in the world, but we’re going to be talking about one cook in particular: Jamie Oliver.
Not only is Oliver a best-selling cookbook author and chef, but he is genuinely a good person in general. In fact, the chef is willing to offer his food expertise to anyone in need and he did just that during his interview with CNN. Check out what he said to buy at a local supermarket in New York City.
Meeting Her TV Hero
Channon Hodge is a producer for CNN and she absolutely adores Jamie Oliver. So when she got the chance to interview her idol, Hodge was ecstatic! But while she was happy to meet Jamie Oliver, she was also grateful for the chef’s advice.
As a mother of a toddler, Hodge admired Oliver’s dedication as a father of five and wondered how he was able to deal with some of his kids being picky eaters. Her own son is very particular about what he eats, so Hodge was eager to learn some tips from a professional. And Oliver certainly offered some good food tips!
Tip #1: Swap Half the Meat With Beans
As they are traversing the grocery store, Hodge mentions that she made bolognese using Jamie Oliver’s own recipe. The dish was delicious, of course, but the reporter did talk about how Oliver used lentils in the recipe as an alternative for meat. Oliver explained his reasoning for this.
The chef stated that he wanted to upsell healthier foods like fruits and vegetables, because that’s exactly what our bodies and the world needs. With meat reduction, we can include other sources of protein, such as butter and kidney beans. You’ll still get the protein, but for half the price and beans can be found everywhere as they are usually stored in cans, which last for a long time.
Tip #2: Shop What’s In Season

Going on to the next tip, Oliver comments on how vegetables like potatoes and onions are great foundations for meals. Not to mention that they’re pretty cheap as well! But the same can’t be said for every food.
Asparagus, for example, is not only expensive but it’s not in season right now. Oliver advises using vegetables like pumpkins and squash, because they can last for a while due to their tough outer skin. Such vegetables are also very tasty in dishes too!
Tip #3: Find Value by Looking at Prices by Weight
For this third tip, Jamie Oliver first compares the prices of baby carrots on different shelves. One bag is $7.98 a pound while the other is $1.35 a pound. Which would you choose when looking at the price and weight of the carrots?
While some people don’t think the price and weight for certain foods doesn’t matter, it’s actually a bigger deal than you think. If you buy a big bag of potatoes simply because there’s a lot in the bag and they’re cheap, make sure you have a plan for them. Don’t just buy food if you’re not going to use all of it in a reasonable time frame.
Tip #4: Pick Recipes That Create Versatile Leftovers
You may not be aware, but a lot of people don’t care much for leftovers. Yeah, food may not taste as flavorful when you reheat it compared to when it was first cooked. But that’s when you think outside of the box!
Oliver says that you should make meals that leave you with a good amount of leftovers. It will save you time when you don’t feel like cooking the next day and you could turn those leftovers into other meals. Or, if you want to keep the leftovers for a while, just put them in the freezer for later.
