Many people believe that brushing their teeth is enough to keep their teeth clean and healthy. But in reality, brushing really does only about half of the job. There are those bits of food, bacteria, and plaque that the bristles of a brush can’t reach. There are simple solutions for this, however, so don’t panic just yet!
Of course, besides brushing, flossing is also an important part of oral hygiene and it helps to get rid of anything between your teeth and along your gum line. While flossing should be a normal part of your daily routine, most people tend to forget about it or disregard flossing entirely. Don’t be one of those people. If you need help choosing the best floss for your teeth, you can always look online for different types of floss or visit your dentist to discuss your options. We all got our own unique set of teeth, so the same kind of floss won’t work for everyone.
Another way to improve your oral hygiene is to use mouthwash. If you’re brushing your teeth and using floss regularly, then mouthwash isn’t really necessary. It can still be used if you want some minty fresh breath, however, so keep a bottle around anyway. But if you don’t brush and floss at least twice a day, then mouthwash is a necessity because it can help to kill harmful oral bacteria. Mouthwash can also brighten your teeth, prevent cavities, and reduce the risk of dry mouth, which is a condition where the mouth doesn’t get enough saliva to keep it moist.
And while we’re on the topic of mouthwash, why don’t we talk about oil pulling? What, you’ve never heard of that? Well, you know what they say: “You learn something new everyday!”. Well, oil pulling is swishing around edible oil in your mouth like mouthwash. Some of the best oils to use for this are coconut, sunflower, and sesame oil. I just so happen to have a bunch of coconut oil for my hair, but who knew it could also be used to rinse your mouth!
Tongue scraping is another technique that some people may not know about and it helps to remove bacteria from the surface of your tongue. Scraping your tongue can help prevent bad breath and improve your sense of taste, enhancing your tongue’s ability to pick out different sensations. It can also make your tongue’s appearance better, because tongue scraping will get rid of excess debris on your tongue. Debris on your tongue will appear as a white coating or build-up, which can make your tongue look white or even furry. Imagine having a furry tongue…actually don’t do that, please.
Here’s something that you may hear all the time when it comes to your health: Drink more water! Yeah, I know, but it’s true that water can assist with keeping your mouth clean. Acids from things like food and drinks can harm your enamel, but drinking water can actually dilute those acids and protect your teeth. Simply guzzling down a cup of water can remove residue like bacteria that can cause bad breath and harm to tooth enamel.
As always, if you want more tips on how to improve your oral health, you can just go to your local dentist. They’ll be happy that you came by to sit down and talk about it really. Your oral hygiene is centered around your mouth, yes, but you also have to understand that the condition of your mouth can affect the rest of your body. Dentists know this and they want you to be healthy, so speak to them about the best treatment for your teeth.
See, keeping your teeth healthy doesn’t have to be so hard. It takes just a little bit of time out of your day to make sure your oral hygiene is up to par. And it feels great when you smile and are showing off those pearly whites, doesn’t it? But you have to remember that in order to keep that beautiful smile of yours, you have to do right by your teeth! Your dentist can’t do all the work for you, you know.
